Samurai Restaurant

Located in the Back Bay section of Boston, this project consisted of redesigning the exterior entrance space of the Samurai restaurant. The goals of the project were to make the traveling public at street level aware of the restaurant’s lower level entrance, as well as create a warm, garden feel to the entire entrance experience. To accomplish these goals the design introduced a sculptural wood wall element that started above street level, acting as a guard rail, and then folded over the side edges extending down into the entrance level. Horizontally punctuating this wood wall on its inside face was a series of linear stone panels that gradually reveal a water feature. The sight and sound of the cascading water attracts visitors down into the entrance space. Bluestone, plantings, and select areas of gravel were used as surface material to enhance the garden feel throughout.
