This project consisted of a series of design options intended to transform an existing open parking lot into a multi-functional series of garden, plaza, parking, and circulation spaces. Through innovative design, the development of a site program, and the implementation of green design strategies, the site functions as more than just a parking lot. The main design features consist of two elevated greenhouse structures, an entrance plaza, outdoor cafe, community garden, bike storage area, and the introduction of porous surfaces such as permeable pavers and rain gardens. The elevated greenhouses are the main design elements. They are a transparent, abstract interpretation of the iconic Somerville "Triple Decker". Their cantilevered design allows for unobstructed circulation in the parking area below. They also act as infill elements providing a strong, animated presence along Beacon St.
