SETH BERKOWITZ LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

This project consisted of the development of design options for a patio and adjacent terraced garden in the backyard space of an existing single family home. One of the major design challenges was to incorporate these spaces into a unified circulation system that would link to other areas of the backyard and an adjacent entry drive. The design options also had to address a seven foot drop in elevation from the main backyard space to a basement entrance along the building. Option A used a linear circulation and design pallet to connect the various spaces, with terraces cascading down to the basement elevation off the main path. Option B expanded upon the terracing concept by having the steps and planting beds become the main terracing elements, along with an overhead trellis. Option C incorporated a curvilinear design language while still using terracing as a method to address the changes in site elevation.
